Reconnecting to Reiki

Reiki Room at Tiny Rituals

Paula’s treatment room ready for a peaceful Reiki session.

Recently I had a couple of people reach out to me to ask if I could re-attune them to Reiki. In both cases they had not used their reiki for some time and felt disconnected from it. I appreciate that some Reiki masters do offer a re-attunement, but this is not a service I offer. The reason for this is that it is not necessary, once we are attuned, we are attuned for life. Nor do I feel it really works, my own reiki journey began with my level 1 training in 2004. Initially I ate, slept and breathed Reiki, but life got busy and I found myself barely using it for a couple of years. I saw a local lady advertising re-attunements and booked in. She gave me a reiki session and then did the re- attunement. I felt nothing special, no more than the usual wonderful benefit of the session. Afterwards I continued to simply dip in and out. It was a few months later that I felt Reiki calling me back, this time I just started my daily self practice again. Calling the energy in was far more powerful than any re-attunement. Reiki is universal energy and as with all energies we simply need to call it in. So if you are feeling disconnected from your reiki or feeling like a failure or a fraud because you aren’t using it regularly here are a few gentle ways you can reconnect.

Start by remembering why, what drew you to Reiki in the first place? How did I feel when I first connected to Reiki and why am I drawn to it now? Journaling on these questions will help you to remember and clarify your why.

Practice ten minutes of self Reiki daily. Choose a time each day where you can be undisturbed for ten minutes, light a candle, put on some gentle music or sit in silence, focusing on your breath, place your hands on your body and simply allow the Reiki to flow. I would recommend doing this daily for 21 days.

Make your Reiki practice a part of your daily rituals. If you already have a sacred space where you perform your daily rituals maybe you could cleanse it and set new intentions, if you don’t have a specific space, maybe you could create one, even if it is as simple as turning a shelf in your bedroom into a reiki altar.

Read your reiki manuals or a reiki book, listen to a podcast to reignite your passion, maybe arrange a swap with another practitioner if you know one. Often it is not that we have lost our connection, just that we have forgotten how great it feels to practice regularly.

Reiki Treatment area

Practice reiki anywhere, make a calm and peaceful area to sit.

Reconnect to the Reiki principles, maybe write them out and put them somewhere in your space where you can read them each morning, choose one to work on each day or just remind yourself of them all.

Incorporate Reiki into small acts throughout the day. Send reiki to your morning coffee or infuse it into your meals. Give reiki to your pets or plants. As you sit with your coffee or tea in the morning you could send reiki intentions for the day ahead, or whenever you get a moment to yourself, place your hands over your heart or belly and let the reiki energy flow to yourself.

Finally, remember consistency is key and it is easier to stay consistent if we feel ease and pleasure, so please don’t try to do too much at once, creating a feeling of pressure and overwhelm. Start with one small daily ritual and as it becomes a habit, build on that.
